“This shop has been a shoe shop for many, many years. My husband and I took over it over four and a half years ago – when it became Shoes on Picton. The granddaughter of the original owners who started the shoe shop years ago still comes in here to buy her shoes.
My background was in the dental industry, but I ended up in shoes by default. My husband has been in the shoe business since he left school. My father-in-law was in the shoe industry, so when Rob left school he went into the pattern room to learn about design, then was sent to the UK to study shoe design. He has worked in all aspects of the shoe industry from the factory floor up. He’s now a wholesaler and he works for companies in Australia, helping design women’s ranges for the Australasian market. So, with that experience, we felt we were well placed to handpick fabulous footwear from around the globe for the shop.
I had learnt a lot about shoes from being around Rob, so coming into this business was an easy transition for me. I initially missed the dental industry – the girls I worked with and you got to know the patients and their families. But we have a lovely team here and three wonderful ladies working with us.
The Auckland market is mall dominated and chain dominated so we feel that we have an opportunity to offer a fantastic range of quality ladies footwear and great service. We stock local brands such as Bresley, Cassini and Minx and international brands such as EOS, Ecco, Birkenstock and Arcopedico.
We’ll never get back what we lost in the lockdowns. We have a good Facebook page and a lot of loyal followers, we sold the odd pair of shoes through there which I would deliver when we came into level 3. We have a lot of local, loyal customers, that’s for sure! They always come back again and again. Also people from all over Auckland that like to shop here because we are independent and offer a variety of shoes that differ to the chain stores.
